The Next Blogger Network Event #NBNevent
Lily and I had the pleasure of attending the Next Bloggers Network Event on Friday afternoon and we both agreed it was our favourite event to date. It was held in the 100 room at the very cool Ace Hotel in Shoreditch which offered panoramic views across the London skyline, it really was the perfect venue! Upon arrival we were offered a glass of Prosecco (Lily had an Elderflower fizz which was equally delicious). We then explored the room where we discovered a nail station at which WAH nails were giving guests manicures, Lily opted for a grey colour with a statement marble effect nail on her ring finger. Monica Welburn founder of The Elgin Avenue was also there at a flat lay station.
Monica Welburn | The Elgin Avenue
Monica was surrounded by lots of beautiful Next goodies and was about to start a talk on Instagram tips and how to take the perfect flat lay which we were really excited to listen to. I’ve seen quite a lot of posts sharing Instagram tips lately and they all seem a little samey so I was really impressed with Monica’s talk as she offered some invaluable advice. After the talk we were invited to play around with the Next props to create our own flat lays. Taking photos is my absolute favourite part of blogging but I’ll be honest the thought of shooting a flat lay makes me stress (Just ask Lil). I love looking at other peoples but mine always look a bit…Meh. Having said that I really enjoyed playing around with the different backgrounds and items at the flat lay station (it helped that there were so many incredible products to choose from) so who knows, maybe flat lays will start making more of an appearance on our feed.
Some of the tips we picked up on were:
- Put together a prop box and keep it near when shooting flat lays so you have easy access to mix things up until you have the perfect layout.
- If the surfaces are a bit boring in your house you can invest in some boards for the backgrounds from the Photo Boards company.
- Take advantage of the Portrait option in Instagram – your image doesn’t have to be a square, if a rectangular image showcases your composition better go for it!
- Think of images in thirds, our eyes are trained to see things that way.
- Pick 5 things that encompass what you are about and repeat these themes on your Instagram to make sure it feels coherent.
- Try the Mosaico app to preplan your Instagram content, it doesn’t automatically post to Insta (I don’t think anything does) but it means you can play around with your image order until you are happy with the look of the feed and you can preplan your captions rather than panic posting on the spur of the moment.
Food and Drink at the #NBNevent
I basically have an addiction to sugar so any event that puts on an afternoon tea is always going to be a winner in my eyes. Next really pulled out all the stops – there was so much food for us to help ourselves to. The scones were still warm and smelled as good as they tasted and I particularly enjoyed the passion fruit tart with coconut meringue. There were giant mason jars filled with drinks to help ourselves to and a fridge stocked full of fizzy just in case anyone was still thirsty. As the evening went on we were offered mojitos and waiters brought around pots of mini foods which included sausage and mash, a vegetarian risotto and fish and chips. It’s safe to say we were very well fed.
The #NBNevent Panel
We were already huge fans of Lily Pebbles, Anna from The Anna Edit and Niomi Smart so were very excited to learn that they would be on the Q&A panel at the event. They were joined by Chloe of Chloe Digital who is basically the queen of coding. The ladies were funny and all gave great advice answering the audiences questions and talking about their backgrounds. We loved how comfortable Anna and Lily were with each other and there was such a great vibe in the room. We felt incredibly inspired and very grateful to them all for their insights into the world of blogging.
Next Collection Preview
The afternoon was very chilled and we had the opportunity to peruse their new collection at our leisure. We can’t wait to add some of the pieces to our wardrobes for the Autumn/Winter months. We loved the reds (very on trend right now)/ burnt oranges and houndstooth prints which featured heavily on the clothes rails. We also can’t wait to get our hands on some of their gorgeous knitwear (anyone else excited to finally start wearing their chunky knits again?)
As if we hadn’t been treated enough Next also very kindly gave us each a goodie bag as we left. They were so generous and we both received a Next Blogger Network notebook and pen, A circle across-the-body bag, A 3 in 1 shadow stick, a high shine lip gloss, some macaroons, tassel earrings and a luxury fragranced candle from their Chiltern collection! Best goodie bag ever?!
We really had the best day and want to say a huge thank you to the Next team for having us! You all made us feel so welcome and we were utterly spoiled.
If you have Instagram it would make our day if you could follow us over there too! Or why not subscribe to our YouTube channel for our weekly uploads? (We are uploading twice a week throughout October)!
