Disgusting Beauty Habits You Should Leave Behind

With makeup and skincare trends taking over our social media feeds, I thought it was about time to share some of the shocking and quite frankly disgusting habits some of us beauty addicts have.

Removing eyebrow makeup once a week

A couple of my students were actually the inspiration behind this post when they told me that they only remove their eyebrow makeup once a week. Unfortunately this habit is not uncommon with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian saying that they sleep in their makeup (although not for a week).

I understand that it probably saves some time in the morning with getting ready and a lot of women like to look their best at all times, but the amount of dirt and pollution that you come into contact with each day make it ideal causing problems such as spots, dehydration and oiliness – not to mention the state your pillow must look after smearing it with makeup!

My advice is to cleanse, tone and moisturise when you wake up and before you go to bed. If you really must sleep in makeup, apply it freshly before bed (but remove daily).

Setting makeup with hairspray

I have heard a lot of people say that they do this. Hairspray contains alcohol which dehydrates the skin, it feels sticky and can be a trigger for people who suffer from asthma. It can also block the pores and irritate the skin. Ditch the hairspray and invest in a makeup setting spray! There are so many to choose from including ones to help keep oil at bay or hydrate the skin. My favourite is the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray.

Never washing makeup brushes

For the same reason you should throw your mascara away after 3 or 4 months, you should also wash your makeup brushes regularly. Brushes are ideal places for bacteria to grow, which you are then swirling in your makeup and applying to your skin – yuck! Ideally you should sanitise you brushes after every couple of uses using a brush cleaner spray which dries instantly and then deep clean your brushes every 2 to 4 weeks. There are lots of tools and washes available now to make this easy.

Squeezing blackheads

This is one habit you can continue to do! Blackhead extractions are actually included in some facial treatments and carried out in the right way it can really improve the appearance of your skin.

The correct way to do it is to first cleanse your skin and gently exfoliate, too. Next, steam your face as this will open up the pores and make it extractions easier. Wrap a tissue around each of your index fingers and gently squeeze the blackhead out. You should never apply too much pressure as it could damage the skin and make it bleed. If it wont come out easily Рleave it. Once you have finished, apply toner to the area using a cotton pad.
